How to get a oil filter off thats stuck on?

any hints? How to get a oil filter off thats stuck on?
A strap wrench will provide the most torque, until the point where the filter collapses. If that happens, use large channel-lock pliers, or stab it through with a large flatblade screwdriver. You can also use a chisel and hammer to try to spin the baseplate of the filter. Make DAMN sure your turning it in the correct direction before resorting to any of these. Also, if you damage the filter and then CAN'T get it off, you'll have to get it towed to a shop.

The screwdriver trick works well. Here are some other tools that work too.

Filter pliers: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/s鈥?/a>

socket type filter wrench:http://www.ntxtools.com/network-tool-war鈥?/a>

All of these are available at parts stores and are pretty useful.
Hi

First off make sure your turning it the right way counter/clock wise or to the Left.. things look different from under the car/truck. If you don't have a filter wrench then a long screwdriver used as stated above.. also when you put the new one on, oil the rubber gasket on the new filter (make sure the old gasket cam off with the old filter or it well leak bad). Makes it easier to get off next time and only turn it 3/.4 of a turn after the gasket makes contact with the block or snugly NOT tight.

good luck

oil filter wrench. but im guessing you dont have that. so next best thing that i did once. drain the oil 1st(obviously), then jam a long screew driver thru the filter and use that to get some more leverage and twist it off. a little messy, but it'll do it.
I used to do some work as a cable guy. And still have the long bits I used. Seems like every time I buy A new car I have to drill a hole low and straight through both sides on the bottom and leverage it off. Pretty silly how tight they put them on from the factory.

I imagine a long skinny screwdriver would work as well. I had a couple filter wrenches the strap type where no good then had a universal wrench that aparently wasn't that universal.
put a hole is it and put a oil filter wrench on it and turn it some can be very tight depending on who put it on. when you put the new one on don't over tighten it good luck
no dont stab a screwdriver through it just incase you cant do it and have to take it somewhere, try using a big pair of channel locks always does the trick
i have before drove a screwdriver through it to get it off. what,s wrong is someone put it on too tight. all you do is tighten them hand tight.
Drive a screwdriver through it and twist it off or if you can get large channel locks on it that will work too.
Stab a screw driver through it and turn it. We all do it, no harm done.
Go to the parts store and buy an oil filter wrench. They're cheap
