sounds like the first thing u need to do is get the oil changed,dirty thick oil,can definitly make the engine lifters tick,especially,when its,cold2001 ford explorer tapping in engine oil kinda thick could it be a clogged oil filter?
the oil filter base came with by-pass system, when oil filter get clogged the oil by pass the filter and continues lubricating but without filtering the oil





that could damage your vehicle so when was the last time you change the oil?





change the oil and check if it continues doing same thing if that dont help then i recomend you an engine flush, those service lets the engine very cleand and remove all that sludge that could make the tapping in engine oil2001 ford explorer tapping in engine oil kinda thick could it be a clogged oil filter?
more like a valve tap, once the car warms up the oil should lube the valves better. If its not going away when the truck warms up get it checked.
try changing the oil and use 10w/40 havoline
