So, my dad and my boyfriend have told me two different things. My boyfriend says that getting a one-year oil filter I can just not change the oil filter for 1 year with the right oil. As for my dad, he insists that one year oil filter is bad for your car and 3 month oil filters are better and that you're suppose to still change your oil with one year filter like every 3 months. So who is right?! Thanks. Is one year oil filter worse than 3 month oil filters?
You father is the more right of the 2. It doesn't matter what length of time the filter or oil is rated for, you should always change your oil every 3 months or every 3k miles. A few fact to consider here:
1) The synthetic and semi-synthetic oils made now are manufactured to not break down for anywhere from 5,000 - 10,000 miles. But this is not that main reason behind changing your oil every 3 moths or 3,000 miles. The oil in your engine will become dirty, and changing the oil this often is a means of removing that dirt from the system, as the oil filter starts to lose its ability to keep oil clean about then. (No matter how long it says it will last)
2) It DOES matter what oil you use, and yes, there is a difference. Some of the best oil on the market (Amsoil, Royal Purple, and BG) are a bit too costly to be used by the everyday vehicle owner. Mobile 1 is a very good brand to use, it comes highly recomended by many mechanics. I personally use Rotella T HD 15W-40, but i have a 6.2 diesel engine.
3) If you were to change you oil, but not your filter, it would not be very smart, because you still have a filter that is no longer capeable of cleaning the oil of its cantaminantes. Some people say it is safe to just change your filter every 3 months, and leave oil in the engine, the problem i see with that is the fact that oil is not really THAT expensive, and for the trouble you would go through removing the filter and replacing the oil you took out with it, you can just as easily change the oil completely.
Basicly, the point is that still, even in todays modern engines, it is wise to change your oil every 3 moths or 3,000 miles. This will help keep your enging at its peak performance and your vehicle lasting longer. Hope this helps, good luck.Is one year oil filter worse than 3 month oil filters?
Change your oil every 3 months or 3500 miles, it will be cheaper in the long run... not all oil is the same. I use and recomend Castoroil
As usual, your Dad is right.
When you change just the oil, there's still a quart or so of old oil left in the filter. That's bad, because old oil contains contaminants (like water and acids) that wreck your engine. That's why you hear ';3 months OR 3000 miles.'; The mileage puts crud into the filter; the time allows water and other chemical contamination that promote corrosion.
Further, the old filter is partially clogged by the gunk it already captured, so it's closer to clogging, and having the bypass valve open, and allow unfiltered oil to go through the engine.
If you need a filter, you need it to work.
You should always change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles, no matter what the filter or oil manufacturer tell you. It's the cheapest form of insurance you can have
I've never heard of a filter rated by length of service. You should change your oil and filter according to the car manufacturer's specifications, period. Most modern cars call for 5000 miles on petroleum oils or 10000 miles on synthetic. There's no need for more, and there is risk in less.
changing oil filters should be based upon miles driven,. not time. oil and filter should be changed every 3-4000 miles, regardless of time elapsed.
the more expensive oil filters are usually better than the
cheap ones.

as for the oil, use the type recommended in owners manual or its written on the oil fill cap on the valve cover. most cars today use 5W-30. use an oil from a known company, pennsoil, valvoline, quaker state, etc.. dont use cheap, no-name brands.
I never pay to much attention to warranties or advice I just pull the dip stick that is what is used to check the oil and if it is getting toward black I change the oil and fikter along with the air filter this way I know that my oil is clean and will stay cleaner longer as long as I keep th air filter clean ..
There are some that would say that with the newer oil being a detergent, that you dont have to change at 3000 mi too. Unfortunately, although I don't doubt it suspends all the dirt in the oil rather than in the engine, all that dirt is still getting between things. Your dad grew up with old mechanics, doing things on his own im sure. Most shops still tell you 3000 mi. for a reason. Any filter material will break down, like your fav blanket just doesnt keep you warm on its own anymore...Although the one year filter will prob hold up better, once it's saturated with particles, can it really filter effectively? I myself have my Legend up to 340,000 miles, no rebuild, only thing to keep it going was changing a few sensors as they went bad and changing the oil and filter at 2-2.5k.. I'd love to know who changes their oil at 5k, or filter once a year (for me that would be more than 15 oil changes) and still has the engine run with good compression at 340k mi.
like most dads me being one we have had trial and errors in the past so go with your dad. a filter picks up metal dirt and any thing else that will harm your engine so change your filter every time you change your oil that way you can say thank you daddy when your car lasts for another 2-3 years or you can say daddy can you pay for my car to be fixed after 6 months of not changing the filter.
AMSOIL Extended Life Synthetic Motor Oils deliver exceptional protection for 7,500-mile/6-month oil change intervals or longer
where stated by vehicle manufacturers
The advantage of synthetic oil is that it can withstand higher temperature and can work longer without losing its lubricating qualities. It doesn't get thicker at below-zero temperatures providing good engine lubrication at a cold start. However, since it's more ';thinner'; a high-mileage engine filled with synthetic oil will more likely to develop leaks and you will more likely to hear lifters tapping noise at a start. Therefore, If you have low mileage or turbo engine and driving under heavy conditions such as high temperature, excessive load, long intervals without an oil change, etc., or simply want to provide extra protection for your engine, synthetic oil may be a good solution. But I don't think it's worth to use synthetic oil in high-mileage engines - thicker mineral oil will provide better protection as long as you change it regularly.
to kevin: castor oil is if you need to puke not for cars. use castrol gtx
type of oil ,wieght does mattter i would stick with factory oil viscosity and filter or 100% synthetic oil i have had good luck with these oils on low and high mileage engines recomend changing every 3,000 miles it really depends on your driving habits good luck hope this helps
Oil filters are normally rated by the number of miles you drive. I tend to agree with your dad on the oil filter question, but totally disagree with your dad on the question of the oil. My husband was a mechanic and he made me promise never to use Pennzoil. He rebuilt a lot of engines and found that Pennzoil uses paraffin (wax) in their oil and the engines would be gunked up with the wax. His favorite was Havoline. I tend to stick to his favorite, but have used other good quality oils. They're not all the same.
i recommend purolator pureone oil filters and castrol syntec full synthetic, i use both and still change my oil under 3000 miles
